Wednesday, 27th September
At short notice, we decided to spend today floating down the river. The weather was overcast and slightly cooler, but we decided to brave it anyway, and just go for it.
In the beginning our boat was full, and we had six others in the raft with us. Our guide, Tubs, did all of the paddling work. Our job was to relax and enjoy the scenery, while he informed us of some of the wonders along the way.
Everyone else departed at lunch time, and with a warning of storm clouds downstream, we had to make the decision to continue or not. The vote came out 4-1 in favour of continuing, so we scrounged Eliza some extra warm clothes and went for it.
The weather cleared up, and we had an enjoyable float to ourselves. With Tubs, we discussed politics, the difference in scenery and culture between the US and NZ, NFL vs rugby, and of course, the wildlife and the valleys.
During our journey, we passed through the Fisher Valley and the border of Arches National Park. Jonty spotted mule deer; we saw some beautiful blue herons near their rookery; and saw swallows nesting under a sandstone overhang.
