The road trip really begins...heading East and into the SNOW!

From Astonishing Jane

We left Seattle on Friday, 15th Sept and managed to make a 4 hour journey to Spokane, a city by a river, take all day. Two nights in the cheap and disappointing accommodation, then a quicker 3 hour journey to Missoula, another city by a river. Crossing through three states and going back a time zone, finally we have made it to Yellowstone. We passed stunning views and snow covered mountains to be greeted with snow outside our wooden home, and forecasts that barely scratch above 0 degrees for the week we are here. We hope our meager (summer expecting) layers are up to the task.

The city of Spokane is quite a beautiful city, which ironically reminded me of Hamilton in NZ. It is a university city that has a shallow river running through it, and a series of rapids and low falls. Along the banks it has a number of hydroelectric turbine stations, that were installed about the turn of last century and each station is independently and privately owned. It is trying to modernise, but has some truly lovely red-brick buildings; more and more of which are becoming unoccupied. It also had the best public library building that I've ever seen!
